Paul Honour - Hip with Bikram Yoga
Paul Honour is the kind of guy who just exudes perpetual motion. So, when
he started experiencing hip pain two years ago, becoming less active was
simply not an option - but the idea of surgery was just plain scary to
"I have always been active: surfing, boating, kayaking – all
kinds of water sports, really – and seven years ago I started going
to Bikram Yoga in St. Augustine to help me sustain strength, balance,
and flexibility I as I entered into my fifties." says, Paul. "Then,
two years ago I started losing range of motion in my right hip which got
worse over time. The pain became so bad that it was really slowing me
down and I needed to seek medical help.
When I learned that I needed a hip replacement, I did some research and
talked with a personal friend whose wife had recently had surgery in Atlanta.
He advised me to find a hospital that utilizes a new anterior surgical
approach for hip replacements, which requires less cutting and speeds
healing. According to my friend, only 5% of surgeons across the country
were performing this innovative procedure - and about the same 5% of hospitals
have the right equipment in place to facilitate the surgery. I was so
pleased to learn that Flagler Hospital had the necessary state-of-the-art
operating rooms and Dr. Grimes was specially trained in the anterior surgery
technique! It was such a relief that I didn't have to travel to Atlanta
to have this done.
Now that I have my new hip I have zero pain, and I am back to my active
lifestyle. I had never been in a hospital before, or even broken a bone,
so I really didn't know what to expect and had a lot of apprehension.
But from the pre-surgery education class I attended at Flagler Hospital
through surgery day and recovery, everyone I encountered was caring, professional,
and made my stay a great experience. The hospital room and even the food
was great. The nursing staff, aids, and physical therapy department were
very attentive to my every need. Thank you for giving me my active life
