Bariatric Surgeons Visit Flagler for State-of-the-Art Training Flagler Hospital's own Dr. Robert Marema recently hosted a team of surgeons from Texas to teach them an advanced course on performing the SPIDER Sleeve Gastrectomy. This was the first in an anticipated series that will attract surgeons from around the globe - right here to Northeast Florida. Recognized as a national expert in the field of weight loss surgery, Dr. Marema was the first surgeon in Florida and the second in the world to perform this innovative surgery.

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy is the latest and fastest growing type of surgical weight loss procedure, which dramatically minimizes the size of a patient's stomach. The new Transenterix SPIDER technology allows surgeons to make a single incision in the belly button, rather than the five separate small incisions in a patient's abdomen typically required when using conventional laparoscopic equipment.

Flagler Hospital was the first in the nation to host surgeon-to-surgeon training on the use of the device. The visiting physicians were able to observe a surgical case, participate in hands on training, and attend lectures by Dr. Marema.

Dr. Marema is the medical director at the Flagler Hospital Bariatric Surgery Center - a Center of Excellence facility. His practice has performed more than 13,000 surgical weight loss procedures on patients from around the world.  He is a long-standing member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Fellow of the American College of Surgery, Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a member of the American Medical Association.
