    Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

    8.0-16.0 hours. The ACLS Provider Course provides the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest. Providers are expected to learn to manage 10 core ACLS cases: a respiratory emergency, four types of cardiac arrest (simple VF/VT, complex VF/VT, PEA and asystole), four types of prearrest emergencies (bradychardia, stable tachycardia, unstable tachycardia and acute coronary syndromes) and stroke.

    Advanced Excel

    2.0 hours.  This course provides participants with the advanced skills needed to improve an Excel table.  They will learn to create and apply styles; use AutoFormat; and use advanced functions.

    Advanced PowerPoint

    2.0 hours.  This course provides participants with the advanced skills needed to improve a presentation in PowerPoint.  They will learn to create and format shapes; use animation; create graphs; create diagrams; create tables; and learn how to use word art.

    Advanced Word

    2.0 hours. This class will teach participants the advanced skills needed to produce a document in Microsoft Word.  They will learn how to format paragraphs using bullets, number, borders and shading; learn to create an outline; use headers and footers; working with columns; and how to create envelopes and labels.

    Basic EKG Class

    8.0 hours.  An introductory course for RN’s, LPN’s, and Monitor Techs who have no experience in the interpretation of rhythm strips.  Content that is covered includes: anatomy and physiology of the heart, the conduction system, and rhythm identification and interpretation.  The effects of electrolyte imbalances and medications on the cardiac rhythm are discussed.  A comprehensive handout is given to all participants.  A test is given the last day of the class and a score of 80% is required to obtain a certificate of course completion.

    Beginning Computers

    2.0 hours.  This course provides participants with the basic skills needed to work on a computer.  They will learn to identify parts of a computer; computer terminology; understand desktop icons and Windows’ basic functions; and identify Microsoft programs and become familiar with the functions of each.

    Beginning Excel

    2.0 hours.  This course provides participants with the basic skills needed to produce an Excel table.  They will understand spreadsheet terminology; learn to open, navigate and close workbooks; learn to enter and edit labels and values; use basic formulas; move and copy data; and how to print documents.

    Beginning PowerPoint

    2.0 hours.  This course provides participants with the basic skills needed to produce a presentation in PowerPoint.  They will learn how to choose a design template and change a page layout; how to add, delete and move slides; how to add text, images, animation and sound to a slide presentation; and how to start and end a slide show.

    Beginning Word

    2.0 hours. This class will teach participants the basic skills needed to produce a document in Microsoft Word.  They will learn to identify screen components and how to use toolbars; how to navigate through the program; how to create, save, preview, print and retrieve documents; and how to use basic formatting functions.

    Charge Nurse Workshop Series: Topics I

    2.0 hours.  Topic I, Conflict Management.  After completing this course, participants will be able to identify opportunities to use conflict resolution skills and plan and conduct an effective discussion to resolve conflict.  The skills learned in this course will be useful in situations where conflict is interfering in work performance, morale, relationships, and/or the harmony of the work group.  Participants will discover how to clarify issues and improve communication in order to build a stronger work team.

    Charge Nurse Workshop Series: Topics II

    2.0 hours.  Topic II, Problem Solving.  After completing this course, participants will be able to break problems down into manageable components and develop an efficient and effective course of action to resolve them.  Various problem solving and critical thinking strategies will be explored and barriers to effective problem solving will be identified.  

    Charge Nurse Workshop Series: Topics III

    2.0 hours. Topic III, Stress Management.  After completing this course, participants will understand the purpose and function of the stress response, and understand the role of the mind in creating and managing stress.  Participants will also learn the difference between helpful and harmful stress responses as well as techniques for reducing the frequency, intensity, and duration of unnecessary stress responses.  Techniques for addressing sleep problems related to stress will also be explored. 

    Charge Nurse Workshop Series: Topics IV

    2.0 hours. Topic IV, Feedback.  Participants will learn the importance of effective feedback and techniques for delivering positive feedback as well as feedback for improvement.  Participants will practice delivering various types of feedback.

    Charge Nurse Workshop Series: Topics V

    2.0 hours.  Topic V, Delegation.  Participants will learn to use delegation as a dynamic tool for motivating team members to reach their full potential.  In addition to learning what types of tasks/responsibilities should be delegated, participants will learn an effective strategy for insuring that the individual is ready to accept the task that is being delegated.  This strategy includes the ability to communicate effectively, the ability to instill confidence, an understanding of control and responsibility, an understanding of effective monitoring, and the ability to respond to outcomes and failures appropriately.

    Charge Nurse Workshop Series: Topics VI

    2.0 hours.  Topic VI, Anger Management. Participants will define anger and learn how anger affects life choices and interpersonal and business relationships.  Participants will identify the mechanics and triggers of anger and learn techniques for effective anger management.

    CNA/PCT Training

    1.0 hours. This course is offered monthly and a new topic is covered each month for CNAs and PCTs.

    Delegation for Nurses

    2.0 hours.   A comprehensive coverage of the topic of delegation is provided with definitions of key terms.  The importance of accomplishing work through others is described as well as the disadvantages of inappropriate delegation.  Principles of delegation are described including legal and ethical responsibilities.  The steps in selecting the right person, situation, task, and outcome are discussed, and a checklist for delegation is presented.  Pitfalls in delegation are identified; strategies to delegate effectively are discussed; and the legal implications of delegation are explored.  Aspects of managerial work that should never be delegated are also emphasized.  Finally, leadership issues in the determination of the proper skill mix and use of unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) are examined.

    Ethical Issues in Research

    1.0 hour.  Ethical principles, as applied to research, are discussed.  Development of ethical codes and guidelines are emphasized.  The concept of informed consent is explored with emphasis on the elements of informed consent are also discussed.  Appropriate documentation of informed consent is stressed and the researchers’ responsibility to protect research subjects is explored.

    Exercise Class

    Participants will take part in a strength training and cardiovascular workout guided by an instructor.  Participants should wear comfortable work out clothes and good walking shoes and bring a mat/towel and water.  Weights (1, 3, and 5 lbs) are optional.

    First Aid Class (includes Adult CPR and AED)

    This course combines lectures, demonstrations and video with hands-on training and practice. Participants in this course learn to recognize and respond to emergencies including shock, cardiac and breathing emergencies for adults, heat and cold emergencies, sudden illnesses and poisonings. Additionally, participants will learn first aid for everything from cuts and scrapes to muscle, bone and joint injuries.

    Health Care Provider CPR (Certification and Recertification)

    4.0-8.0 hours. The BLS Healthcare Provider Course teaches CPR skills for helping victims of all ages (including doing ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen); use of an automated external defibrillator (AED); and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It's intended for participants who provide heath care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital; for certified or noncertified, licensed or nonlicensed healthcare professionals.

    Heart Saver CPR w/AED

    The Heartsaver CPR Course is a modular course that teaches lay rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for adult, child and infant victims. Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children. 

    Intermediate Excel

    2.0 hours.  This course provides participants with the skills needed to improve an Excel table.  They will learn advanced formatting functions including inserting rows and columns; work with multiple worksheets; use headers and footers; and learn to define a print area and add page breaks.

    Intermediate PowerPoint

    2.0 hours.  This course provides participants with the skills needed to improve a presentation in PowerPoint.  They will learn how to use a master slide; change the format and/or appearance of a presentation; add headers and footers; and how to use hyperlinks.

    Intermediate Word

    2.0 hours. This class will teach participants the skills needed to improve a document in Microsoft Word.  They will learn to create and edit text; use proofing tools including speller and grammar check; and learn advanced formatting.

    Journal Club

    1.0 hour.  The purpose of the Journal Club is to help staff stay current on recent and sometimes past developments in nursing, increase knowledge of evidence-based practice linking research to practice, gain knowledge of strategies to increase research in clinical practice,  teach staff how to evaluate research articles, develop comradely among staff,  promote personal and professional growth. At each meeting, the membership will review an article and discussion is stimulated by the peer group.

    NNO: Computer Class

    4.5 hours.  Basic introduction to computers and technology available at Flagler Hospital.  The employee will be able to identify the main components of a personal computer and demonstrate the ability to operate a PC using a Windows environment.  At the completion of this course, the employee will be able to access and navigate within the hospital internet and intranet sites in order to obtain relevant information to assist in performing her/his job function.  The employee will also demonstrate the ability to use the Meditech, Health Information System, including: logging on and off, password security, sending and receiving intrahospital electronic mail, patient order entry, and retrieval of patient medical information.  Nursing employees will demonstrate appropriate use of the PYXIS Medication delivery system by successful completion the PYXIS on-line self study tutorial module.

    Overview of the Research Process

    1.0 hour.  An overview of the research process is discussed.  The phases and specific steps in the research process are presented.  Application of the research process to specific clinical problem areas is emphasized.

    Professionalism for Nurses

    2.0 hours.   The employee will discuss and explore profession, professionalism, and professionalization.  Is nursing a profession or an occupation?  The criteria for a profession, a continuum of professionalism, and barriers and facilitators in attaining true professional status are examined.  Leadership and management behaviors are described to enhance nursing’s image and provide the leadership and autonomy necessary for professional recognition.  A brief historical perspective of nursing is provided in terms of media, stereotypes, and public views of nurses.

    Review of Research Literature

    1.0 hour.  The concept of review of research literature is explored and defined.  The purposes of the literature review are emphasized.  Ways to conduct a literature review are discussed, including use of library resources.  How to critique the literature review section of a research report is illustrated.

    Service Leadership for Employees (SLE)

    4.0 hours.  Prepares the service provider to meet or exceed customer expectations through using key principles and service steps.  Teaches the service provider how to recognize dissatisfied customers and how to perform service recovery.

    Team Building for Nurses

    2.0 hours.   Prepares the employee to implement team building in complex situations with multidisciplinary healthcare workers.  The composition of an effective group is discussed, and the elements of group interaction are reviewed.  The stages of group development are also examined in terms of the group’s process and work.  The reasons people join groups are discussed.  The advantages and disadvantages of group work are examined as well as descriptions of the purpose, functions, and guidelines for meetings.  The composition, structure, and use of committees are also described.  A continuum of decision making power is presented, and management and leadership implications for group leaders are discussed.

    Walk off the Weight Exercise Class

    Participants will take part in a gentle stretching and walking exercise guided by a video instructor and a facilitator who will be present in the room.  Participants should wear comfortable work out clothes and good walking shoes.  Participants will have an option to complete the beginning level work out and then stop, or continue with a more intense workout.
