As part of Flagler Hospital's initiative to educate and enrich both its employees and its community, The Life Institute offers a wide variety of classes and flexible scheduling. It is our hope that the classes provided by The Life Institute endows students with important skills for professional as well as personal growth. Please check this page regularly for updated class descriptions, new classes, and expanded scheduling options.

Life Support Classes

AHA BLS Healthcare Provider CPR Initial Certification and Recertification
The BLS Healthcare Provider Course teaches CPR skills for helping victims of all ages (including doing ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen); use of an automated external defibrillator (AED); and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It's intended for participants who provide heath care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital; for certified or noncertified, licensed or nonlicensed healthcare professionals.

PALS Initial and Recertification
This course is designed to aid pediatric healthcare providers in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. Skills taught include recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; the systematic approach to pediatric assessment; effective respiratory management; defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion; intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

STABLE Initial and Recertification
The S.T.A.B.L.E. course is designed for staff charged with stabilizing infants prior to transport and stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support.

Miscellaneous Classes

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
This course teaches an evidence-based approach to the resuscitation of the newborn.  The causes, prevention, and management o mild to sever neonatal asphyxia are carefully explained so that health professionals may develop optimal knowledge and skills in resuscitation.  Please note, you will need to call the Life Institute to register for the online examination within 30 days of the class date!

Trauma-Informed Care
This introduction to Trauma-Informed Care will provide an overview of Trauma-Informed Care, discuss the benefits of Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) scores, discuss the emotional, neurological, and chemical changes that trauma can cause to the brain and body, and review commonly practiced therapies and models in the treatment of trauma.

Cardiac Monitoring Technology and Basic EKG Essentials Course
Upon completion of this CMT/Basic EKG Essential Course, participants will  be able to identify the following:  bedside monitoring practice standards, sinus rhythms, atrial rhythms, ventricular rhythms, junctional rhythms, AV block patters, myocardial ischemia, myocardial injury, bundle branch blocks and electrolyte disturbances.
